Hotel / Resort Staff Housing
In a region of the world where the living conditions of the workers is regularly under the spotlight, the staff quarters were exemplary in how to design and build low-cost housing that is still humane – well before these subjects became a reason of global concern.
The management suites are housed in a detached block to provide a level of hierarchy and separation from the regular staff, but positioned in close proximity to the main accommodation block to avoid any disconnection between the staff irrespective of their work title. The Management suites are all 1-bedroom apartments with a hall, living room kitchen and bathroom.
For the remaining staff sharing is limited to a maximum of four persons and each of the rooms is fully en-suite with a separated WC and shower for the comfort of the occupants.

The Rooms are centered on courtyards for to take advantage of the ‘courtyard-design’ principles of designing in hot and arid environments. Thus, natural ventilation is harnessed as much as possible while solar panels occupying the entire roof are used to heat the total staff hot-water requirements. As in tradition, the courtyards provide cool, shaded and protected communal areas for sporting activities and social gathering thus fostering relationships between the staff, leading to healthier working environment. Phase 1 was completed in 1999, while phase completed in 2004. Both follow the above design principles.
