This 23,000-sq. ft (2,300-sq. metre) luxury residence forms part of the Saleck Family Residence in Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania. As the residence of the head of the family presented a challenge in trying to ensure, that in the hierarchy of the residences, the building should project the ‘largest’ and the ‘most important’ yet being smaller in size of the other residences in the complex.

Like all of the residences in the complex, the house has three zones family, guest and service. Circulation between the three is carefully controlled to avoid overlap and thereby compromise in the privacy of the family and/or the guests. Designed around courtyards with plenty of verandas and sit-out spaces, the architectural style of the building, the massing and spatial arrangement follows that of what we refer to as the New Mauritanian Style – a blend of Moroccan, Andalusian and desert architecture – the key influences on Mauritania through its history.
